Designed to help new or potential teachers be effective in the EFL Classroom.

 

The Introduction to teaching course is designed to help new and potential teachers be effective in the EFL Classroom. The course highlights many aspects involved in teaching and tutoring a wide variety of learners with differing learning styles.  Teachers are able to explore different approaches to teaching vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.  There is also a focus on the four skills learners need to practice on: reading, listening, writing, and speaking.

  • Date – Every Saturday

  • Time - 10am to 3:30pm

  • Venue - Creative Spark, Dundalk

Course Outline:

Section 1

  • Language level testing i.e. a level test from the British Council

  • Conducting a Needs Analysis, its importance and utilization

  • Pronunciation using the phonemic chart – English Language Club

  • First day activities and exercises for students

Section 2

  • The importance of good classroom management

  • The needs of different learners

  • How to stage a lesson – the tasks involved in setting up and running a task/activity

  • Example task – practicing question formation and speaking through

  • True and Lie game.

Section 3

  • Grading language appropriately – avoid overloading students and conversing appropriately

  • How to give clear and effective instructions

  • Checking and clarifying meaning – the use of timelines for tenses

  • In the students’ shoes – feeling lost

  • The importance of concept check questions to clarify meaning

Section 4 (Optional Class Observation)

  • Observe techniques, strategies, ideas, and resources

  • Observe best practice in how to effectively manage a classroom

  • How to teach vocabulary and grammar 

  • How to set up a listening and speaking task
